Naropa University Announces the Grand Opening of the William D. Jones Community Greenhouse on Earth Day, April 22, 2009
Boulder, Colo. -- Naropa University will celebrate Earth Day 2009 with the Grand Opening of the William D. Jones Community Greenhouse on Wednesday, April 22 at noon at the Naropa Performing Arts Center, 2130 Arapahoe, Boulder.
Naropa's Earth Day celebration, a free public event, will begin with a presentation, "Growing Strong Communities: Lessons from the Naropa Greenhouse" by special guest Robert Martin, former National Ombudsman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chief Public Advocate of National Environmental Public Advocates, a Boulder-based nonprofit organization.
The Naropa University Greenhouse Project (http://www.naropa.edu/about/env_greenhouse.cfm) was initiated by eight students in the fall 2006 Advanced Applied Horticulture class who envisioned a campus that could exemplify alternative food production methods. One of the cofounders, a graduate of the B.A. Environmental Studies (http://www.naropa.edu/academics/undergraduate/enviro/index.cfm) program, Leigh Burbank Rovegno says, "We envisioned that the Greenhouse Project would bring a new light to the Environmental Studies department. It will provide hands-on learning for students interested in growing their own food for a more sustainable future. It's great that the project was a community effort involving students, faculty, staff, as well as Boulder community members."
Local businesses and foundations made gifts to support the Greenhouse Project. Major donors include Dean Witter Foundation; Bryan Bowen Architects, P.C., The Lotus Fund, Community Foundation; The Woloson Family Foundation, and Namasté Solar. The Greenhouse Project builds on Naropa's long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability (http://www.naropa.edu/about/env_president.cfm) with a campus-wide program that includes recycling, alternative transportation and wind energy.
